Brazilian drivers have been using stickers with different characters from their license plates to avoid fines, revealed a recent video.
In the clip, shared on social media, a person is seen pulling off a sticker that was placed over a car’s license plate. However, the sticker had characters that were different from the official plate of the vehicle.
This trick can be used to avoid fines, as traffic cameras will register a different license plate instead of the real one. But, obviously, this is an illegal practice and, if caught by authorities, you could be fined, have your vehicle seized, or even be arrested.
According to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), this violation is considered very serious, with a fine of R$ 293.47 (approximately US$ 55), seven points added to the driver’s license, and vehicle removal.
“The use of any material to mislead the reading of a character for another, through the use of stickers, paint, or partial removal of the paint, is considered a very serious violation, as per Item I of Article 230 of the CTB,” said lawyer Marco Fabrício Vieira, a member of the Legal Effort Chamber of the National Traffic Council (Contran), to the website UOL.
Furthermore, this behavior also constitutes the crime of altering or re-stamping an identifying mark, as outlined in Article 311 of the Penal Code, with a sentence of three to six years in prison and a fine.
